Coeliac disease patients taking vitamin B gain large benefits in protecting their systems and reducing Hyperhomocysteinemia - 13/01/11
Like many diseases and conditions associated with celiac disease. The research into vitamin deficiency associated with the disease is scant. A major 2009 study into vitamin supplement effectiveness on Celiac disease, as reported in the World Journal of Gastroenterology suggests that there are positive benefits.
Because celiac disease affects the intestine and its ability to absorb nutrients, celiac patients have long been advised to take vitamins to help repair their body and boost their immune system. The study looks at deficiency of folate and vitamin B12. The study found that ‘Hyperhomocysteinemia’ is significantly more frequent in patients with newly diagnosed coeliac disease than healthy controls.
Wikipedia says that “Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally large level of homocysteine in the blood. It is thought to be caused by a gene defect. As a consequence of the biochemical reactions in which homocysteine is involved, deficiencies of the vitamins pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9), or B12 can lead to high homocysteine levels. Supplementation with pyridoxine, folic acid, B12, or trimethylglycine (betaine) reduces the concentration of homocysteine in the bloodstream. Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a disease which increases risk of other artery or vein diseases.” read more

Dementia may be linked to celiac/ coeliac disease. We review the Mayo clinic research - 04/01/11
The theory about celiac / coeliac disease being connected to dementia has been bandied around celiac and gluten free chat rooms for about 5 years now. And amazingly it has all stemmed from one study conducted by the Mayo clinic in the US in 2006.
If you search online for this information, you will find many articles of about the same small size basically paraphrasing the summary section of the media release. The question you may like answered, is, is there really a link, what happened to follow up research and is there any other data out there?
The Mayo study uses data analysis of medical records of ONLY thirteen patients with some form of dementia. The records span from 1970 to 2005. The quotes I will display in this article DEFINITELY suggest that celiac disease MAY BE linked to dementia. read more

A May 2010 study has found probiotics such as bifidobacteria can greatly benefit a celiac /coeliac 8/08/10
There has been a great deal of speculation about the value of probiotics in a celiac diet. The latest research
(May 2010) suggests that probiotics can be of significant positive value to a celiac. Earlier studies (2008) investigated the well known fact that diet influences the composition of gut microbiota on a person’s health, specifically on those who have food related diseases such as celiac and diabetics.
While the study only used a small sample of people (ten) it conclusively found that those on a Gluten Free diet had a poor balance of good and bad bacteria. Namely the good bacteria counts decreased: Bifidobacterium, Clostridium lituseburense, Faecalibacterium prausnitzi,i Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium longum decreased. Conversely ‘bad bacterian’ counts increased: Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli. read more

Explore the strong link between celiac / coeliac disease and diabetes 1.
This article highlights the link between celiac disease and diabetes. This link has been known since the 1960s but here are some updated details. The article shows that there is a positive link (not necessarily a correlation), between people with celiac/ celiac disease and diabetes.
To recap on definitions, celiac/ Coeliac Disease, it is caused/ or exacerbated by the ingestion of the gliadin fraction of wheat gluten and similar molecules (prolamins) from barley, rye, and possibly oats that causes damage to the intestinal epithelium.
“In Type I diabetes, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The beta cells are destroyed, resulting in a loss of insulin-producing capabilities. Insulin is a vital hormone that permits glucose, a simple sugar that is the body's main source of energy, to enter into and be used by the body's cells to sustain life.” (www.enabling.org) read more

Gluten Free Beer has some interesting ingredients. We look at what they are ... 12/05/10
Gluten Free Beer tastes different from ‘regular’ wheat beer. If you are coeliac / celiac or gluten intolerant and used to enjoy beer, then you may still want to continue drinking some form of beer that doesn’t spring from barley, wheat, rye, spelt, oats, kamut and triticale. Every wonder what replaces barley and these other grains that are used in regular beer and what properties these other ingredients have? Then this article is written for you.
As beer is often made from wheat and barley and these two grains contain gluten, gluten free beer manufacturers need to use substituted grains. The first thing a gluten free beer brewer needs to consider is whether they intend on making a pale or dark lager. The answer to this is that roasting grains for the longest time tends to produce the darkest beers. One of the most regular grains people use is buckwheat, sorghum and millet as the base grain. The other gluten free grains that can be used are; rice, maize, corn, sunflower; amaranth, flax, quinoa, teff, wild rice, soybean, read more

Tips on how to keep your gluten free bread from a gluten free bakery FRESH 05/05/10
A Gluten free bakery, once found, can become the cornerstone of a celiac life. Once upon a time, celiac disease was unheard of, then as it became more wide spread the need for gluten free products increased. Unfortunately one of the most sought after gluten free foods is bread and pastries that often can’t easily be found fresh at supermarkets.
In this case people then often search in vain for gluten free bakeries. The problem is that because of the niche nature of a gluten free bakery and non celiac resistance to the health or disease connotations of such a bakery, it has been difficult for bakeries to consider making gluten free bread.
And then there is the issue of gluten free bread often tasting dreadful or gluggy. This article looks at what you need to be aware of when you get your bread from a gluten free bakeries (or other source) and how to treat your bakery products when you get them home.
Gluten, is found in many grains used for basic baking. Some of these are wheat, barley, rye. Gluten free flours can contain (rice, tapioca, potato) or the more exotic bean or sorghum flours, buckwheat and brown rice breads. In this case it can easily be seen how the inclusion of the substitute ingredients can easily overpower the standard bread (wheat) taste that you may be used to read more
Hookworms may hold the secret to a celiac/ coeliac cure. This article looks at Australian research. 03/05/10
While hookworm research in the treatment of coeliac / celiac disease is old news to some, it has not been reported on in the gluten free pages, so I thought that I would give you the basics of the story here. There are several therapies being trialled to help people with celiac disease including a recent Australian celiac trial, however this is one of the more unusual methods out there.
In very basic terms, Australian researchers are looking at using hookworms to stimulate a celiacs auto immune system into giving them more ‘immunity’ to gluten side effects. The squeamish factor comes into it as the hookworm is encouraged to burrow through the test cases skin, enters the bloodstream before residing in the gut. The body’s reaction to this parasite is expected to give people an improved tolerance to gluten and wheat bread products read more
